SRCM Sci-Math Celebration In The Midst Of Pandemic By: Pauleen Marie De Guzman

Monthly events occurring in Saint Rita College-Manila are really anticipated by many, but the month of September is known to be centred in Science and Mathematics activities participated by the students of this school and this celebration happened on September 30, 2021.

A Sci-Math (Science and Mathematics) event was launched on September 7, 2021 with a theme “Invigorating Science and Math Education in the midst of Covid-19 Pandemic”. With this said event, activities and contestS were prepared by the Sci-Math Club; Mini-Me Contest for Kinder to Grade 3 students, E-Poster Contest for students in Grades 4 to 6, and Jingle Contest for Junior High students. Students’ were given 2 weeks to prepare.

The event occurred live in the school’s Facebook Page, started with a prayer led by Ms. Sheena Cantos, a Grade 10 student and followed by the National Anthem. “Without Science, the modern world will not be modern world by any means,” a line from the Sci-Math President that was very remarkable. Then the celebration was emceed by a student named Angela Cristobal and proceeded with the mechanics, presenting the contestants and the awarding.

Mini-Me Contest revolves with the imitation of a famous scientist or mathematician. Participants should present a video of them imitating whom they chose and they have to leave a famous line by the person they’re imitating with a maximum time which is 2 minutes. The jury of this activity were Ms. Princes De Gracia, Mr. Louie De Roja and Ms. Joean Geronimo who are teachers from Saint Rita College-Manila. The second activity which was the E-Poster Contest was about two representatives from each grade level. They should create an E-Poster that was aligned to the said theme. Jury of the E-Poster Contest were Ms. Michelle Carido, Mrs. Charita Junatas and Mr. James Ebesa. The last activity was the Jingle Making Contest with 5-10 participants from each grade level. They should pass a maximum of 3 minutes video presenting their jingle that was aligned to the theme. The set of judges are also teachers from SRCM, they were Mr. Rolando Alfonso, Ms. Julie Villato and Ms. Zaira Madayag.

The awarding ceremony started with Ms. Liezel Marticio, a teacher from Saint Rita College-Manila who is also a moderator of the Sci-Math Club presented the Certificate of Appreciation to the judges. While the other Sci-Math Club moderator, Mr. Francisco Almine announced the winners of the contests. Mini-Me winners were Kyann Bantug placing 3rd runner up, Khristina Cortado placing 2nd runner up, Gabrielle Mueca placing 1st runner up, and Chaille Galang was announced as the Mini-Me Champion. E-Poster winners were Alexie Guinto placing 3rd runner up, Antionette Espiritu placing 2nd runner, Kendra Beltran placing 1st runner up, and Christelle Galang got the Championship in E-Poster Contest. Lastly, the Jingle Making winners, 3rd Placer is the Grade 9 – Love, 2nd Placer is the Grade 7 – Faith, 1st Placer is the Grade 10 – Humility, and the Jingle Making Champion was Grade 8 – Hope.

A closing remark was given by Mr. Almine and ended his speech with a quote from one of the greatest philosophers, Aristotle “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.” The celebration was ended with a video prepared by the members of the Sci-Math Club and a prayer led by a Grade 6 student, Mr. Gibson Esguerra.
